Dramatic Improvement of Corrosion Resistance in Stainless Steel Ball Screws and Linear Guides.
Tokyo, Japan, January 23, 2013 — NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Norio Otsuka) announced today that it has developed a SUSBarrier ball screw and linear guide featuring corrosion resistance that is at least 10 times* higher than conventional stainless steel ball screws and linear guides. NSK plans to take orders for this product from April 2013 as it starts to uncover new potential market needs.
Stainless steel ball screws and linear guides are used in food processing equipment, medical equipment and other equipment used in environments that require a high level of corrosion resistance due to the splashing of disinfectants, antiseptics, and salt water. In particular, the disinfectants and antiseptics used in food processing equipment are constantly being strengthened, resulting in an even greater need for corrosion resistance.
In order to achieve longer product life under these severe conditions, NSK developed a SUSBarrier ball screw and linear guide for its anti-corrosion SPACEA™ series.
These products achieve improved corrosion resistance through the formation of a strong oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel. In this way, such products can better withstand environments that have a high susceptibility to rust and corrosion generation, thereby extending maintenance intervals and improving production efficiency.
Product features
1. Improved corrosion resistance.
Through the formation of a strong oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel, these products exhibit 10 times the corrosion resistance in environments where salt water and solutions of sodium hypochlorite are used, including disinfectants and antiseptics, compared to conventional stainless steel ball screws and linear guides.
2. Basic performance.
Torque and friction characteristics equivalent to that of conventional stainless steel ball screws and linear guides through the thin, uniform formation of an oxide layer, even for long, ball screw-threaded shafts and long linear guide rails.
Applications
These products are well suited to environments that involve the use of disinfectants and antiseptics (such as food processing equipment and medical equipment), semiconductor equipment that is especially sensitive to any corrosion, and outdoor locations that are prone to salt damage. The application of these products in environments such as these will result in extended maintenance intervals and improved production efficiency.
In response to the various needs outlined above, NSK has developed highly functional products that are well suited to challenging environments such as those prone to corrosion. NSK is committed to expanding its SPACEA™ series in order to respond to a wide variety of industry needs and other potential market needs.
