Mr Alfred Tiu president of Grandspan Development Corporation told The Manila Times in an exclusive interview that the silent steel structure industry is expected to grow in the next 10 years as foreign businessmen become more interested to invest in the country.
He said that "With the continuous in flow of the overseas Filipino workers remittance, the resilience in the market will remain. Foreign investors will be attracted to come here in the country to invest."
However, Mr Tiu added that for the third quarter of the year, the Lucio Tan led company experienced a little a bit of a slow down compared to the first part of the year and the previous year. He said that "I think for this third quarter, business slowed down a little bit and for this month of October 2012, there are some projects but it is not as big as we have last year and in the first part of this year."
Mr Tiu also said that "GDC is starting to slow down but not that slow, maybe I would say in terms of the capacity, before it used to be around 80%, now it's half of it or 40%."
However, he said that they have enough supply for their production for the upcoming months. He added that "We don't plan to increase our production because our capacity is already 2,000 tonnes per month and it is more than enough to cater to export and the local market."
Mr Tiu also discussed during the Business Leadership CEO Series held at the University of Sto Tomas the nature of the steel structure industry. In his presentation entitled 'A closer look at the Philippine Structural Steel Industry', Mr Tiu said that the steel structure industry is the most misunderstood and silent segment in the construction industry.
He explained that they do not only build bridges and high rise buildings, but also airport terminals, power plants, car parks, residential projects, shipyards, crane girders and towers. He added that "One advantage of steel over concrete is that steel is very recyclable. When steel is removed or demolished, you can recycle it and use it again in a smaller development."
He also said that in the usage of steel, the production is controlled and that it could be produced in larger spans.
As for its projects, Mr Tiu said that through the years, they were able to build projects around Asia like in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Some of the projects in the country where GDC was involved were the Light Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 2, the Edsa Shaw Boulevard flyover, Calaca Power plant, Ninoy Aquino International Airport 2 and 3, and Davao International Airport, among others.
Mr Tiu said that for the future, they are looking at LRT extensions such as Baclaran to Bacoor and Baclaran to NAIA of LRT 1 and Santolan to Masinag of LRT 2. He added that "These extensions are being studied right now."
Mr Tiu concluded the UST CEO Series that was conducted by the UST Graduate School and facilitated by Professor Dr Tommy Tiu. It was launched by Dr Lilian Sison, dean of the UST Graduate School.
Mr Tiu joined the cluster of chief executive officers and company presidents who shared their expertise and knowledge from their respective industries. Besides Mr Tiu, the others who took part in the series were Metro Pacific Investment Corporation.
