Minebea Co., Ltd. completed construction on the first building of its precision motor plant in Cambodia's Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ). A ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of the plant at 3:00 p.m. local time on December 17.
Minebea was granted an operating permit by the Cambodian government in December 2010 to become the first motor manufacturer in Cambodia, and started small-scale production at a leased facility (with a total floor area of 2,304 m2) located within the PPSEZ on April 1, 2011. Now that its own plant's first production facility (with a total floor area of 28,000 m2) in the PPSEZ has been completed, production will shift into high gear.
The opening ceremony was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister, H.E. Hun Sen; Secretary General of Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI), Dr. Atchaka Sibunruang; Japanese Senior Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, H.E. Seishu Makino; Japan's Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Masafumi Kuroki, as well as other government officials from Cambodia, China, Malaysia and Japan. Minebea President and CEO, Yoshihisa Kainuma, who attended the ceremony along with other company representatives, thanked the Cambodian government officials and other attendees in his speech at the beginning of the ceremony. He then addressed the Cambodian Plant employees, saying, " Minebea's success could trigger a host of new investments as well as dozens of new foreign investments. In this regard, you are truly pioneers in this country and the success of your country is now on your shoulders. You can be very proud of being Minebea employees as leading this country in front line."
Designed for the assembly of precision motors, the Cambodian plant will use parts supplied by Minebea's major production facilities in neighboring Thailand and Malaysia to produce precision motors for the office automation equipment, home appliance and digital equipment markets. Minebea plans to invest five billion yen into building additional plant facilities with an eye to making the plant a large-scale mass-production facility employing up to 5,000 workers. The transfer of labor intensive assembly processes to Cambodia will enable Minebea to enhance its production efficiency across Asia.
