10 Simple Steps to Parallel Shaft Alignment for Simplicity® Linear Bearings

(November 10, 2011 - Rockford, IL)

When using Simplicity® self-lubricating linear bearings in a dual shaft application, it is important to ensure that the shafts are parallel. Misalignment can lead to increased co-efficient of friction, premature wear, and possibly binding that results in catastrophic failure. To avoid these situations, here are 10 steps to simply aligning parallel shafts for linear slide applications:

1. Establish a Master Rail - In situations where the load is centered between the rails, either rail can be the main guide rail or Master Rail. Otherwise, be sure to choose the rail that is closest to the load.

2. Tighten down the fasteners of the Master Rail so that it is fixed in place.

3. Slide the Simplicity bearings and pillow block assemblies on to the Master Rail making sure that they slide freely.

4. Place the Follower Rail in place opposite the Master Rail, but do NOT tighten fasteners or lock it down into position.

5. Slide the Simplicity bearings and pillow block assemblies on to the Follower Rail making sure that they slide freely.

6. Connect the bearings from the two sides together with a mounting plate or bracket.

7. Move the entire carriage assembly to ensure that there is free movement over the full length of the stroke.

8. Begin to tighten fasteners at one end of the Follower Rail and repeat Step #7.

9. Continue to tighten fasteners on the Follower Rail as you continue to test that there is free movement of the carriage over the entire length of the stroke. Adjust the rail in or out as necessary to bring it into alignment allowing movement.

10. Completely tighten all fasteners holding the rails in place.
