Irapuato regarded as an inherent part of Schaeffler’s North American-strategy
Dual training system according to the German model
Christian Wulff, President of the Federal Republic of Germany visited the Schaeffler plant in Irapuato, Mexico during a parliamentary and economic delegation trip through Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil. As a participant on this economic delegation trip, Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler, partner of the Schaeffler Group, and Walter Baumstark, President of Schaeffler Mexico, welcomed the 60 members of the delegation.
The Federal President, his wife and the delegation got a comprehensive overview of production and Schaeffler’s commitment in Mexico during a tour through the entire plant. The Federal President also got an opportunity to familiarize himself with individual products and processes in the plant. The tour also led participants to the “Schaeffler University”, where trainees presented the local qualification program that is run in cooperation with the German-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and Industry. There are currently 120 employees at the Schaeffler University, including 60 trainees and over twenty young engineers.
German president Christian Wulff stressed the importance of providing young people across the world with a good education to ensure they have the chance of active public participation: “The commitment of German companies to the education of young people abroad shows that German industry is also fulfilling its responsibility on an international scale. Furthermore, it shows us that this engagement is one based on longevity and sustainability. The German dual system is a model of success that can serve as an example across the world, including in Mexico.”
Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler emphasized the importance of the Mexican plant in her welcoming speech: “The Irapuato plant is a significant element for Schaeffler in North America and has great importance for our customers in this region. Our more than 760 employees develop and produce innovative solutions here for all important industries. I am particularly pleased that the qualification of employees is also of outstanding importance at this location.“

The Schaeffler plant in Irapuato currently employs over 760 people, who generate sales of USD 100 million. Irapuato is being expanded into one of Schaeffler’s largest plants in North America. In addition to needle roller bearings and classic rolling bearings, Schaeffler produces other products from its product portfolio in Irapuato. Schaeffler Mexico supplies large industrial companies, machine manufacturers and suppliers, as well as classic customers from the automotive industry. The Schaeffler Group has another plant with over 750 employees in Puebla that manufactures system solutions solely for the automotive industry under the LuK product brand.
