Schaeffler (UK) Ltd’s manufacturing plant in Llanelli, South Wales has received a national award that demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
At this year’s Wales Quality Awards 2010, Schaeffler UK received top honours in the Sustainability Prize category. Donna Williams-Bevan, Training Officer at Schaeffler UK, accepted the prize on behalf of the company at the annual awards ceremony held at the City Hall, Cardiff on 2nd December 2010.
The Wales Quality Award is an annual competition based on the EFQM European Excellence Model. The awards are open to all types of business operating in Wales, including manufacturing firms, financial organisations, hospitals, service providers, educational establishments and councils.
Winning a Wales Quality Award is an accolade for any business. The judging and assessment process, which is carried out by a panel of independent industry experts from the private and public sectors, has grown to become one of the most popular awards in Europe. Many organisations that take part in the awards process do so every year, as they use the process as a fundamental part of their company’s planning process to drive further business improvements.
In a speech at the awards ceremony, David Phillips, CEO at the Wales Quality Centre, the organisation responsible for the Wales Quality Awards, commented: “Within the context of this evening, sustainability is about the capacity to endure. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well-being, which has economic, social and environmental dimensions. Within the Excellence Model [EFQM] the measurement of this is largely contained within Society results. As winner of this year’s Sustainability Prize, Schaeffler UK has demonstrated the most significant impact in this area over a period of time.”
Roger Evans MBE, Plant & Automotive Sales Director at Schaeffler UK commented: “We are very pleased to win a Wales Quality Award again. This is the third year in succession that Schaeffler has won a Quality Award and we believe it acknowledges our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. The award for sustainability recognises the strategy, plans and processes that are being prepared to ensure the success of Schaeffler UK in the future, which has resulted in the Llanelli plant securing a considerable amount of investment in new technology during 2011.”
Established in 1955, the Llanelli plant manufactures high precision engine components for the automotive market. The plant currently employs 230 people and is an autonomous subsidiary of the multi-national German-owned Schaeffler Group.
