Federal judge OKs HSBC's $1.9B laundering penalty

A federal judge approved an agreement that will make the world pay HSBC a record 1.9 billion dollar fine solution to help Mexican drug traffickers accused the Bank of England, Iran, Libya and other sanctions in the United States suspected or move money.
Settlement, first announced in December, is the world's largest fine ever levied bank.
The Ministry of Justice in the case of failure to maintain HSBC self-monitoring, allowing criminals and suspects in countries such as Cuba, Myanmar and Sudan move hundreds of millions of prohibited transactions through U.S. financial institutions from the mid-1990s to 2006.
The Eastern District of New York, U.S. District Court Judge John Gleeson Monday approved the plan. It requires court supervision HSBC five years, after which the United States will seek to dismiss the case.
