The German steel industry is heading into a period of uncertainty due to economic uncertainty, the German steel association known as Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl said Tuesday.

MAIN FACTS:
-If the German economy picks up in the second half of the year, steel demand could increase immediately, particularly if steel inventories are low.
-In February, the steel association said the German steel industry isn't expected to see a major recovery until 2014.
