Scotland’s largest independent supplier of bearing and transmission products – has notched up a first for the industry by appointing a bearing technology consultant. Andrew Marshall, who has over 25 years of experience in bearing engineering, products and application, has taken up the new role based at the firm’s Aberdeen office.
The appointment is unique as it is believed to be the first time that any bearing distributor has moved to offer consultative advice in bearing technology alongside traditional supply services. Mr Marshall’s expertise in the field will be instrumental in supporting Scots Bearing Group as it responds to increased demand from the oil and gas industry – a sector which has been identified as one of the company’s key drivers for growth.
Mr Marshall is a qualified mechanical and production engineer and has been a professional chartered engineer since 1993. He has over 23 years of technical experience in the bearing industry with NSK Ltd and Schaeffler (UK), where he developed an in-depth knowledge of INA and FAG products and services.
Although his area of expertise covers a wide range of engineering disciplines including the automotive and industrial segments, Mr Marshall’s role has more recently been focused on directly supporting customers in the oil and gas sector in North-east Scotland.
Mr Marshall says, “Scots Bearings Group has shown a great deal of foresight in making this appointment and recognise that it will give customers significant added value if they can also get technical expertise direct from a supplier. This is an exciting step forward for me and it fits perfectly with the company’s future growth plans.
“I have worked in Aberdeen for the past 12 months with a real focus in the oil and gas industry, but my experience cuts right across the industrial customer sector. The range of clients we have is far-reaching because bearings are used in every piece of rotating mechanical equipment, from cash machines to wind turbines.
“One of the main focuses for me initially will be to develop new business in the energy sector which is one of our strongest performing areas and one in which we believe demand will continue to rise.”
Scots Bearings Group founder and managing director David Jackson adds, “Andrew’s appointment brings a completely new dimension to our service offering, and indeed it represents a completely new approach for the industry.
“There are companies that specialise in technical input and there are companies that supply bearing and transmission products, but Scots Bearings Group has taken the lead in becoming the first UK independent bearing distributor to make such a key technical appointment.
“Scots Bearings Group is going through a significant period of expansion and we believe that Andrew’s appointment will put us in the best possible position to respond to the positive challenges that our continued growth will bring.”
The group has bases in Aberdeen, Ayrshire, Dundee, Glasgow and Inverness, as well as a specialist gearbox and electric motor division in Cumbernauld. The firm employs 56 people across all of its branches. Scots Bearings Group is ISO 9001-2008 and also FPAL/Achilles registered.
