The Federal-Mogul Vehicle Component Solutions (VCS) business segment is introducing its exclusive Glyco IROX engine bearings to the aftermarket.
Now widely used by original equipment engine manufacturers, the IROX bearing technology addresses the lubrication challenges associated with frequent engine restarts in hybrid and other popular stop-start engines, as well as the increased mechanical loads produced by heavily boosted downsized engines.
The new technology can increase the life of crankshaft bearings and bearing shells by more than five times and reduces friction by up to 50% compared to metallic sliding layers. Federal-Mogul is a major supplier of advanced engine components to global vehicle manufacturers. Its full engine expertise brings the latest technologies, training and service components to engine repair workshops.
"When an engine stops, the oil gradually falls away from the bearing surfaces, causing momentary metal-to-metal contact when it restarts," says Paul Vure, Federal-Mogul technical services manager, European aftermarket.
"Stop-start systems increase the number of restarts so dramatically that they need very special bearings to cope with these low-lubrication conditions. IROX is an affordable solution that addresses this difficult engineering challenge," he adds.
The IROX technology is an innovative, polymer-coated bearing shell that can withstand momentary operation without lubrication and is also ideal for the very high bearing loads imposed by boosted engines.
Glyco IROX bearings have also been proven to provide better running-in protection because the soft surface envelops metal particles, preventing them from causing damage.
"This is clearly a significant benefit for engine rebuilders," adds Vure, who also highlighted the importance of fitting IROX bearings where they have been specified by the vehicle manufacturer. "Without IROX, the bearings will fail more quickly in a hybrid or other stop-start powertrain."
