SKF opens first railway test centre in Russia

SKF announced the opening of a new railway test centre in Russia. SKF is the first bearing company to have a certified and accredited test centre under the new Russian Safety norms in Russia. The facility is located at the SKF Tver railway bearing factory which also incorporates an accredited metallurgy laboratory.

"This investment will further strengthen our position as a supplier to the Russian Railways, and provide the local market with high quality solutions for its rapidly expanding railway infrastructure, says Rutger Barrdahl, President Railway Business Unit. "It helps our customers to become faster in their homologation process and allows us to have a closer cooperation with them and become more responsive to their needs."

Testing is part of the development process of new products and solutions and is the key for long-term safety and reliability of railway rolling stock performance. The new centre will test axlebox bearings and units according to the test specifications of the Russian market.

Besides the test centre in Russia, SKF has test centres in Nieuwegein, Holland and in Shanghai, China.

SKF's factory in Tver, which opened in 2010, produces the new generation of SKF's sealed and pre-lubricated compact tapered bearing units (CTBU), for the Russian and international railway customers. The CTBUs are used in freight cars and other railway vehicles. The factory was one of the first in Russia and in Europe with LEED certification, an internationally recognized standard for environmentally sustainable design, construction and operation of buildings.

SKF is a leading rolling bearing supplier to the world railway industry, providing a full assortment of products and services for all types of railway vehicles such as high-speed trains, locomotives, multiple units, coaches, mass transit vehicles and freight cars. In addition to bearings SKF is also a leading supplier of condition monitoring systems and services, as well as sensors to detect operational parameters, for the railway industry worldwide.
