SKF announced that the SKF Rotor Positioning Bearing has qualified into the SKF BeyondZero Portfolio because it is an integral component of Stop-Start systems for micro-hybrid vehicles. In dense urban traffic, Stop-Start can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions up to 15%. Based on an annual mileage of 14,500km, this solution saves 75kg CO2 per vehicle per year.
"The automotive industry is continually looking for solutions to reduce CO2 output and improve vehicle fuel efficiency," says Franco Ferro, Director SKF Automotive, Powertrain & Electrical and Two Wheelers. "In partnership with Valeo, SKF developed the SKF Rotor Positioning Bearing, which helps make Stop-Start possible."
Stop-Start turns off a vehicle's engine when the vehicle stops at a red light or slows down in congested traffic situations, then restarts the engine quickly and silently when power is needed.
The SKF Rotor Positioning Bearing consists of a high performance magnetic ring clamped to a high-speed, high-temperature bearing. Together they produce a powerful, accurate, repeatable and durable magnetic field. The strong magnetic impulses produced by the SKF Rotor Positioning Bearing provide the starter-alternator control system with the rotor's exact angular position, and enable the system to stop and start the engine quickly and quietly.
If all the cars in a city the size of Berlin were equipped with this technology, 127000 tonnes of CO2 emissions* would be avoided each year.
*According to Eurostat, between 2007 - 2009 there were 1,747,790 cars in Berlin. This number assumes that they all were equipped with Peugeot or Citroen eHDi motors.
