SKF (U.K.) Limited has organised another of its very special annual Under 18s football tournaments, which this year will take place in Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday 5 May. The tournament is called Meet The World, because the grand prize is an all-expenses paid trip to Sweden to represent the UK in the international Gothia Cup tournament.
SKF, the knowledge engineering company, has been running local Meet The World football tournaments since 2007. The idea behind this initiative is not only to organise an exciting one-day football contest for the local community but also to give more young people - whatever their culture, gender, religion or skin colour - the chance to travel to Gothenburg, take part in the Gothia Cup and meet other young people from different countries.
This year's tournament will see six 7-a-side teams battle it out over a series of 20-minute matches, totalling five hours of football. Three qualified referees will preside to allow for rotation (one officiating, one monitoring and one resting) while approximately 70 organisers, volunteers and players get busy on the field and earn the free burger that will be waiting for them at the BBQ.
SKF is represented in every country where these local Meet The World tournaments take place and is also the main sponsor of the Gothia Cup, the biggest and best-known football tournament for children and youngsters in the world and, effectively the kids' 'World Cup'.
Last year's competition saw seventeen teams play in a six-a-side event held by the Stroud and District youth league, in which the team from Frampton were crowned winners and travelled on to Sweden to compete in the Gothia Cup.
This year's winners will be crowned victorious at the Weston-Super-Mare AFC club presentation evening that follows the tournament before an expected crowd of approximately 170 people.
Meet The World takes place between 11.30am and 5pm on Saturday 5 May at Weston-Super-Mare AFC, Woodspring Stadium, Winterstoke road, Weston, BS24 9AA.
