Glen Ellyn, IL—The Educational Services Committee of the Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) has released another title in its series of industry-specific educational publications, referred to as Industry Briefs, and intended to enhance the association’s existing Bearing Briefs by identifying bearing selection specifics used by individual industries. The BSA Industry Brief: Wind Power details the use of bearings in the growing wind turbine industry and is available for downloading as a PDF from the BSA website, www.bsahome.org, under Tools You Can Use.
Specifically the Industry Brief begins with an Equipment and Application Overview, then goes on to detail the essential parts of a wind turbine and identifies particular bearing requirements for each part. Among the topics covered are: How Wind Turbines Work, The Main Shaft, Gear Box, Generator, and Pitch & Yaw. Special attention is paid to Operations and Maintenance and Recommended O and M Practices since this represents significant costs to operation and is expected to become increasingly important in the next few years as installed turbines age.
The Educational Services Committee hopes to address bearing selection specifics in various additional industries in subsequent Industry Briefs. It has already published Industry Briefs on Cement and Poultry Processing.
The Key Initiative of BSA’s Educational Services Committee is to “Provide Tools and Knowledge for Bearing Industry Personnel.” In the past the committee has supported this initiative by developing, maintaining and updating as necessary the In-House Training Guide, which has become the industry standard for bearing training. More recently, the committee has also developed and published 26 single-topic Bearing Briefs, all available as downloadable PDFs from the BSA website, with plans for more to come. The BSA Industry Brief: Wind Power was approved at the association’s 2012 Winter Meeting.
BSA is an international service and educational organization of distributors representing a total of almost 100 companies distributing factory-warranted ball and roller anti-friction bearings and invited manufacturers of bearings and related products.
