17 February 2012 - SKF’s technical article — entitled ‘Alignment and maintenance tips from SKF’ — gives advice on how to prevent unplanned downtime, damaged seals and lubrication problems occurring as a result of misaligned shafts and belts.

According to SKF, the improper alignment of shafts and belts can lead to a wide range of problems, including increased friction, excessive wear, premature shaft and coupling failure, excessive seal lubricant leakage, the failure of coupling and foundation bolts and increased vibration and noise.

The technical article provides suggestions for checking for misalignment, including the use of laser-guided tools and accounting for ‘soft-foot’.
