Calculating PV for a Plain Bearing in 3 Steps

(October 18, 2011 - Rockford, IL)

Plain bearings must be evaluated for suitability in an application based on their “PV” rating. Follow these 3 easy steps to calculate the potential performance of a plain bearing.

3 Steps to Calculate “PV” for a Plain Bearing

In order for a plain bearing (sliding bearing) to be suitable for use without lubrication in an application, the following 3 criteria must be met. Follow these steps to calculate each of these parameters:

Step #1 - Calculate “P”

P = Maximum pressure or load in psi (kgf/cm2)

Pressure is over the projected area of load:

Step #2 - Calculate “V”

V = Maximum velocity or surface speed in sfm (m/min)

Linear velocity = total distance traveled in one minute

Rotational velocity =

Step #3 - Calculate “PV”

PV = P x V or the maximum pressure velocity value

NOTE: All 3 parameters must be met in an application for a bearing to perform properly.

The standard Simplicty® linear bearings utilizing the FrelonGOLD® bearing material has a maximum PV of 20,000.
