At 8:30 am local time (10:30 am Japan time) on Tuesday, May 24, Minebea Co., Ltd. ("Minebea" or the "Company") held the groundbreaking ceremony of a new plant for small-sized motors (first stage construction work) at its own industrial site within the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (the "PPSEZ"). The ceremony was carried out with approx. 300 persons in attendance—including H.E. Sok Chenda Sophea, Minister Attached to Prime Minister, Secretary General of Council for the Development of Cambodia and H.E. Masafumi KUROKI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Cambodia.
In December 2010, as the first motor manufacturer in Cambodia, Minebea was granted operation permit by the Cambodian government, and on April 1, 2011, began small-scale production at a rental plant (total floor space: 2,304㎡) within the PPSEZ. The new plant, whose groundbreaking ceremony was held today, is the first building of the Company's own plant (total floor space: 28,000㎡, planned to operate by the end of 2011). Going forward, including the addition of second and subsequent buildings, Minebea plans to invest a total of ¥5 billion in plant and equipment, and make the plant a large-scale mass-production facility with a maximum of 5,000 employees.
Until now, Minebea has manufactured ball bearings, small-sized motors, electronic components, etc. in quantity and efficiently by setting up a large-scale integrated production structure in Asia, such as Thailand and China. Meanwhile, the Company positions the Cambodian plant as a labor-intensive assembly site that will assemble small-sized motors mainly for office automation equipment, household appliances and digital equipment with supply of components from its plants in neighboring countries such as Thailand and Malaysia, thereby aiming for enhancement of production efficiency in the entire Asian region.
Going forward, Minebea will further pursue production in optimal regions that makes best use of its production network in Asia. At the same time, the Company will establish a stable supply structure for its customers by diversifying manufacturing sites and multiplying product supply sources.
