An employee of Brammer, the UK’s leading supplier of manufacturing, repair and overhaul (MRO) products and services, has got on his bike to great effect as part of a local cycle speedway team which has clinched national glory.
Kevin Burns, manager at Brammer’s branch at Corby in Northamptonshire, is captain of Leicester Monarchs cycle speedway team who this season have seen off competition from across the UK to win the British championship–the sport’s equivalent of the FA Cup.
All of the eight-strong team are amateurs, with the season taking them as far as Edinburgh and Exeter for their fixtures.
Kevin, who has been participating in the sport for around 25 years now, is a full England and Great Britain international and has represented his country in events around the world. The team’s home track is at Leicester and is one of just three designated ‘national’ cycle speedway centres in the UK.
The rules of cycle speedway are similar to those of the motorcycling equivalent - each match comprises a number of heats each with four riders competing for points, although contact between riders is more frequent than in traditional speedway.
Kevin said: “Cycle speedway is a really fast and entertaining sport and we always get good support at our matches. To win the British Championship is a great effort from the team and a reward for the many hours of dedicated training and also the travelling which goes with taking part in national tournaments.”
Brammer supplies a wide variety of MRO products including bearings, mechanical power transmission products (including gearboxes and motors), pneumatics, hydraulics, seals and industrial automation, as well tools, maintenance and health and safety products, to manufacturing companies in the Corby area to support their maintenance operations.
