Timken Outlook Upbeat

(December 27, 2010)

Things are looking up at Timken this holiday season.

The company’s Iron Station plant has 800 employees, many of whom Timken called back to work this year as orders from customers recovered from the recession.

Timken manager Paul Hubacher said the demand has picked up enough to require new hiring and investment.

“Our employment is up 36 percent over the last year, when we reached our lowest level,” he said. “Now we’re looking to invest about $1.7 million to further increase our service capabilities to serve demand that has increased 40 percent since 2009.”

Timken plans to extend the plant’s existing capacity for a broader offering. The facility currently produces tapered roller bearings for trucks and mobile equipment in diameters of up to 8 inches.

“This project will protect customer service by providing maximum flexibility and capacity in our heat-treat and green operations to serve peak demand and compensate for short-term mix changes and downtime events,” Hubacher said.

Hubacher expects the resulting efficiency improvements to factor favorably with industrial customers in North America.

“Investment signals our long-term commitment to continually earn customers’ trust as their supplier of choice,” he said.
