Global consumer goods company, Unilever, has been awarded the title of Sustainable Manufacturing winner at this year’s Brammer Manufacturing Forum and Awards, beating competition from last year’s winner, Cadbury, along with finalists DS Smith – Abbey Boards, Ball Packaging Europe and Mars.
The sustainable manufacturing award recognises energy efficiency improvements, both in terms of energy consumption and reduced carbon emissions, made within a company’s production operations, which translates into significant delivered cost savings.
After tasking Brammer with conducting an energy audit at their Leeds site to identify cost saving opportunities, the resulting addition of variable speed drives and Gates Polychain drive belts to the plant rooms delivered over £100,000 worth of energy savings over the project life for Unilever.
Ian Ritchie, Managing Director of Brammer UK, explains: “Many businesses have previously seen energy as a fixed operating overhead but in recent years, due to a combination of government legislation and rising energy costs, views are changing, as the realisation hits that there are massive energy cost saving opportunities within the manufacturing plant and its processes.
“At Brammer we have worked closely with our customers to address this issue, undertaking energy audits and conducting a programme of Energy Efficiency seminars. The results have been phenomenal and this award recognises the company that has gone above and beyond what is expected in making environmental sustainability a key part of the manufacturing process. This year, that company is Unilever and we would like to congratulate the team for their hard work and dedication.”
The Sustainable Manufacturing award was presented to Helen Hunt, Supply Manager - Engineering & Technical, at Unilever.
