Chennai: India Pistons Limited and it's associate companies, IP Rings Ltd and MAHLE IPL Ltd, are investing approximately Rs. 175 crore to expand its process capabilities and introduce new technologies that will enable OEMs meet future emission norms.
India Piston Rings Ltd is expanding its capacity in a phased manner and it expects to cross the 500 lakh per year target in about 18 months. MAHLE IPL (MIPL) has an installed capacity of 45 lakh pistons per year which will be enhanced to about 62 lakh in 18 months. MIPL will also enhance its capability in the areas of machining, casting, non-destructive testing and surface treatment.
India Pistons Limited is also planning a foray into the two wheeler segment in 2011-12 by developing pistons for a range of two-wheelers. The company is currently developing a diamond coating process for rings which will double ring life and enhance engine performance levels.
India Piston Rings Ltd (IPRL), a technical collaboration between India Pistons Limited and Nippon Piston Ring Company Ltd., is introducing the sophisticated surface coating technology, called the Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) technology, to make steel rings for engines in order to enhance its performance and meet emission norms. PVD technology improves longevity of the rings which can work for up to a million kilometers. The company has already invested Rs 25 crore to create a facility for PVD and composite coating and expect to go into volume production in six months.
In addition to beginning commercial production of sealing rings for turbochargers, the company has developed piston rings for two-wheelers and expects to go into full production shortly. The company will also begin the manufacture of synchronisers with molybdenum coating, carbon friction lining and synchro rings.
MAHLE IPL Ltd (MIPL), a joint venture between MAHLE GmbH, Germany,and IPL, will invest in enhancing its R&D setup to be able to offer its customers the latest technologies available in the Mahle group.
India Pistons Ltd, a subsidiary of the light engineering conglomerate Amalgamation Group, has a 200 acre facility in Sembiam, Huzur Gardens, Chennai, a second manufacturing facility located in Maraimalai nagar and a third facility in Sengundrum, 50 kilometers from Chennai.
The company currently manufactures pistons, piston rings, cylinder liners, and ring carriers for small engines and passenger cars with diesel or gasoline engines and power cylinder modules for installation in large industrial, heavy duty diesel, or marine applications. It also markets power-train and valve train products, such as pistons, rings,cylinder liners, engine blocks, gaskets, engine valves,bearings, camshafts, and valve tappets.The company also provides reconditioners and serves the domestic aftermarket.
India Piston Rings Ltd (IPRL) manufactures a wide range of sophisticated piston rings while MAHLE IPL Ltd manufactures pistons for advanced engine applications that require compliance with emission regulations such as Euro IV and above.
The company's major customers include Maruti, TATA Motors, Eicher Motors, Simpson and Co, Hyundai, Ashok leyland, TAFE, Mahindra & Mahindra, KOEL, Indian Railways and other OEMs.
