Electrical Linear Actuators – Thomson's New Brochure Highlights the Benefits

12 October 2010, DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY – Thomson, provider of innovative linear drive and guidance systems, has released a new brochure offering detailed guidelines on how to use electrical linear actuators in construction machinery, including diggers, wheeled loaders and crawler vehicles. The publication aims to provide customers from this key market sector with a comprehensive decision-making tool for selecting the best components for their machinery.

Drawing on specific examples, the numerous advantages of electrical actuators are set out in comparison with hydraulic or pneumatic drives. From smooth installation due to compact dimensions and more user-friendly control functions, to cost saving potential as a result of reduced energy costs and a higher level of adjustment accuracy, right through to significantly reduced maintenance costs and an improved level of environmental acceptability – each aspect is covered in detail.

The example of a quick changer for the safe and simple conversion of one add-on unit to another is used to highlight the advantages of an electrical linear actuator across the component's entire life cycle. The most immediate benefit is reduced development costs, since the complex actuating system, consisting of hoses, valves and filters for hydraulic solutions, has now been replaced with a simple set of basic switches. This not only makes installation extremely fast and simple, but also offers the purchaser a whole range of benefits, particularly in terms of operating cost and productivity levels. In addition, the actuators are fully protected against the infiltration of dirt and are permanently lubricated, making them completely maintenance-free. In addition to this, hydraulic hoses that are prone to wear and oil filters that need replacing at regular intervals are now a thing of the past.

With electrical actuators, energy consumption is reduced as losses are kept to a bare minimum and, unlike hydraulic systems, pumps are not required to run during downtimes to maintain operating pressure. Electrical actuators also provide increased levels of safety and convenience for drivers as operation is much easier and noise levels are significantly reduced. In many cases the resulting benefits are so considerable that it is worthwhile replacing an existing hydraulic or pneumatic drive with an electrical actuator.

Additional illustrated examples include throttle control for automatically regulating motor speed, motor-driven opening and closing of heavy covers, as well as controlling plunger valves for booms and tilting cylinders of equipment.

The brochure can be downloaded in PDF format. Further special brochures on the use of actuators and guides in other industrial sectors, e.g. for medical devices or the construction of systems for the generation of power from renewable energy sources can also be downloaded here.
