INA's Contribution to the Braking System for the New Japanese High Speed Trains

Needle roller bearings for the Shinkansen:

With a range of components for the braking system of the new Shinkansen E5, the Rail Sector Management of Schaeffler Group Industrial has succeeded for the first time in being represented in the Japanese high speed train. The new series of the Shinkansen will starti running between Tokyo und Shin Aomori from December 2010. The increase in travel speed along this line from 275 km/h to 320 km/h required a new high performance braking system, which was developed by Knorr-Bremse. The axle-mounted brake calipers in the system are fitted with needle roller bearings and drawn cup needle roller bearings, inner rings, axial bearing washers, bearing washers and axial needle roller and cage assemblies from INA.

Surface coating and special sealing:

The drawn cup needle roller bearings are protected against corrosion by the Corrotect® N coating. Corrotect® N is an extremely thin surface coating free from chromium VI, developed by the Schaeffler Group. It protects products and components against corrosion and especially against the formation of rust on the running surfaces under the seals, which could be caused by condensation, rainwater or contaminated water. In comparison with conventional coatings, Corrotect® N offers up to 50% greater protection against corrosion. As a result, the service of the seals and rolling bearing components can be significantly improved. The seals of the drawn cup needle roller bearing for the Knorr braking system were specially developed and designed to fulfil the particular requirements of this application.

The Industrial Division of the Schaeffler Group supplies rolling bearing and plain bearing solutions, and linear and direct drive technology under the INA and FAG brands for around 60 different industrial sectors via its worldwide organization with market proximity and application support service. The range comprises more than 225,000 products from miniature bearings only a few millimeters wide, e.g. for dental drills, to large bearings with an outside diameter of many meters, e.g. for wind turbines.
