Gerald Fox of Timken Co. has been named one of the first “Innovators and Influencers of Wind Power” in a special section of Windpower Engineering.
Windpower Engineering, a resource magazine for the wind power industry, said the innovators have had a significant impact on the wind industry.
Canton native Fox, with 43 years at Timken, works on technology to advance the engineering of the load-bearing components inside a turbine’s gearbox, the most critical point of operation. Chief technologist of wind energy, Fox holds 14 patents with 14 other patent applications in process, many related to wind energy.
The company received its first chance to prove the concept for wind energy applications in a turbine running offshore from Scotland’s Orkney Islands. The gearbox, equipped with Timken’s bearing system, has been running without fail since April 2004, more than a fourfold increase in service life compared to other designs.
