NSK Receives the 2009 Paper Award from the Society of Materials Science, Japan

NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Norio Otsuka) announced today that it has received the 2009 Paper Award from the Society of Materials Science, Japan (JSMS) for a research paper entitled, “Hydrogen-Induced Microstructural Change under Mode II Fatigue for a Tempered Bearing Steel.” The research was conducted jointly with Kyushu University. An award ceremony was held on May 22 at the 59th Annual Meeting of the Society of Materials Science, Japan held at Hokkaido University.

Outline of the Award
Award received: The Society of Materials Science, Japan (JSMS) 2009 Paper Award
Technical paper title: “Hydrogen-Induced Microstructural Change under Mode II Fatigue for a Tempered Bearing Steel”
Recipients:
Shinji Fujita, NSK Ltd.
Yoji Mine, Kyushu University
Saburo Matsuoka, Kyushu University
Yukitaka Murakami, Kyushu University

Outline
If hydrogen infiltrates the rolling contact surface of a roller bearing, white structure flaking may occur, significantly reducing the service life of the roller bearing. However, the mechanism behind white structure flaking is not fully understood. As a first step in clarifying the basic mechanism of white structure flaking, the paper identified the effect of hydrogen which causes fatigue behavior.

Looking to the future, NSK will continue to pursue products and services of the highest quality, offering greater reliability and further reductions in energy loss. As a product manufacturer, NSK is working to achieve a sustainable society that is both affluent and preserves the global environment.

About the JSMS Outstanding Technical Paper Award
The award was established in 1966 to honor authors who present outstanding articles for publication in the journal of the Society of Materials Science, Japan.
