“Since 2007, Brammer has been successful in working with customers to identify cost savings across 500 different customer sites in the UK, delivering more than £70 million of operational cost savings.”
This statement by Jeremy Salisbury, head of marketing at Brammer, the UK’s leading supplier of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) products and services, was made during a television interview to be shown during May and June on The Business Channel. The half-hour programme entitled ‘Building a Greener Britain’ - available on both Sky Digital (Channel 166) and BBC/ITV Freesat (Channel 402) - takes a look at the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC). The CRC is a mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme covering larger UK businesses, designed to encourage changes in behaviour that will improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The programme will be shown on Sundays and Mondays at 1.30pm and Thursdays at 8pm from 24th May for two weeks.
Brammer was one of a number of hand-picked representatives from UK industry who, together with Government ministers and officials, were invited to comment on the important environmental considerations affecting the future of British business.
Protecting the environment involves businesses acting in a more sustainable manner, such as using less energy and reducing waste. According to Brammer, organisations taking measures to protect the environment, such as reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, can also improve their operational performance and profitability. Additional cost savings can be achieved by improving energy efficiency in areas such as mechanical and electrical power transmission products, hydraulics and pneumatic systems.
During the interview, Jeremy Salisbury highlighted industrial electric motors, variable speed drives and compressed air systems as key areas where significant reductions in energy usage can be achieved. He commented: “Electric motors and drives account for two-thirds of power consumed within UK industry. By reducing energy usage, considerable cost savings can be achieved. For example, an electric motor will typically consume 10 times its initial purchase cost in electricity in just one year. By opting for a higher efficiency motor, running costs can be dramatically reduced. Taking a 10Kw efficient motor as an example, you could save £1,500 in running costs over the lifetime of that one motor. Think of the massive savings in running costs that can be made by the industrial plants that are operating many hundreds of electric motors.
“Another illustration of saving energy and costs is in the use of variable speed drives, which can reduce the amount of power consumed for motor drive applications such as fans and pumps. If there is a variable or fluctuating demand in the operating environment, by using a variable speed drive to reduce speed by 20% energy consumption can be reduced by up to 50%.
“With compressed air systems, leakage, misuse and misapplication within many manufacturing environments are commonplace. By conducting a compressed air audit, Brammer can identify where wastage occurs - such as where there are leaks in a system – and recommend how system designs can be improved. In addition, we can help organisations reduce consumption where operators are not using compressed air in the most efficient way.”
