Federal-Mogul Corporation (Nasdaq: FDML) was the recipient of three 2010 Automotive News PACE Awards at a ceremony on April 12 in Detroit. The prestigious award recognizes automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance.
Federal-Mogul was granted PACE awards for three of its innovations,
including its DuraBowl® piston reinforcement process, its High Precision Electro-Erosion Machining (HPEEM) manufacturing process and the company's Bayonet Connection System for profile wiper blades. The company's Quietshield(TM) (GRN) acoustical padding was a PACE finalist and FelPro® PermaDryPlus® intake manifold gaskets received an honorable mention.
"Developing leading technology and innovation is a fundamental priority for Federal-Mogul to be a world-class company capable of generating sustainable global profitable growth and to satisfy customers', shareholders' and employees' expectations," said Federal-Mogul President and CEO Jose Maria Alapont. "Our world-class leading technology and innovation in materials, design and manufacturing processes, together with our global competitive cost, provides market leadership positions for our core products."
The DuraBowl process strengthens the crown of a piston by re-melting
the alloy around the piston's combustion bowl, significantly improving the fatigue strength of the aluminum where it is most needed. The result is an extension of piston life to between four and seven times that achieved with a conventional cast piston.
Federal-Mogul's HPEEM manufacturing process is a non-contact metal
shaping process which manufactures, with extreme precision, bushingless steel pistons that perform under higher cylinder pressures found in today's cleaner, higher performance, heavy-duty diesel engines. HPEEM achieves an extremely high-level of manufacturing precision - to tolerances of 3-4 microns - that enables engineers, with minimal cost and capital investment, to design components with increasingly stringent manufacturing tolerances that improve overall engine reliability and performance.
Federal-Mogul's Bayonet Connection System for Profile Wiper Blades has emerged as the industry standard for flat-blade, profile windshield wipers; the system provides rapid, cost-effective and simple wiper blade replacement and is featured on more than 20 vehicle platforms worldwide.
Federal-Mogul has previously won four PACE awards for its Wagner®
ThermoQuiet® brake pads and shoes in 2003; for the Monosteel® diesel piston in 2006; and for its High-Temperature Alloy (HTA(TM)) gaskets and Goetze Diamond Coating (GDC®) for piston rings in 2007.
The 16th annual PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to
Excellence) Award was presented by Automotive News, Ernst & Young LLP and Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC Inc.). The competition was open to suppliers who contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to the manufacture of cars or trucks. The Automotive News PACE Award is accepted around the world as the industry symbol of innovation.
Federal-Mogul's HPEEM and DuraBowl processes won in the Manufacturing
Process and Capital Equipment category, which recognizes innovations
involving game-changing processes (manufacturing or business) or innovative capital equipment that support the automotive supply chain or manufacturing processes. The Bayonet Connection System was recognized in the Product-Europe category, which highlights innovations developed or first commercialized in Europe in new products or components or systems that have significant market impact and act as "game changers" in the automotive industry.
Federal-Mogul earned the Automotive News PACE Awards following an
