Joint Brammer/ Cadbury Project Receives Prestigious Industry Award

A project by Brammer UK, part of Europe’s leading distributor of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) products and services, which has created financial and environmental savings for Cadbury, has been recognised with a prestigious industry award.

Based on an assessment and recommendations by Brammer, the upgrade to the process for manufacturing Bassett’s Jelly Babies at the Trebor Bassett factory in Sheffield has saved Cadbury £60,000 per year as well as more than 400 tonnes of CO2.

These figures impressed the judges of the Energy Award organised by power and automation technology group ABB and leading industry title Drives & Controls. Awards are made to end users who have made an installation or plant more energy-efficient by applying appropriate automation equipment and/ or by installing high-efficiency motors or drives.

In this instance, a total of 26 11kW motors, which had been identified as excessively powerful for the gum stove application for which they were being used, were replaced with 4kW motors controlled by variable speed drives (VSDs). At the same time, the installation’s standard V-belts were replaced by Gates Polychain synchronous drive belts, which can cut energy consumption by 5-6 per cent. All of the new equipment was supplied by Brammer.

Darren Henighan of ABB presented a framed certificate to Tim Jeffries, Site Engineer and Facilities Manager at the Sheffield site, with Paul Blake, Regional Key Account Executive for Brammer, in attendance.

Paul Blake commented: “We are delighted that our work with Cadbury in reducing energy usage and carbon emissions has been recognised with this award. It’s a clear demonstration of how end users who work closely with a strategic partner such as Brammer are enjoying major operational benefits and cost savings through the introduction of energy-efficient equipment. The savings achievable can be equally marked for customers of any size and in any sector.”
