IBS Precision Engineering has extended its New Way range of flat, rectangular, porous media air bearings.
These are now available in sizes from 12mm x 24mm up to 150mm x 300mm.
The larger sizes provide the load capacity to handle heavier gantries, where previously a design engineer needed to incorporate several bearings on each side.
'Our largest standard product is 200mm in diameter, and we continue to receive requests for even larger sizes,' says Hans Ott, IBS Precision's sales manager.
'Our large rectangular bearings enable us to offer the machine builder more load capacity in a smaller area.' The smaller sizes are engineered to meet the high-precision requirements of an increasing number of micromachining and nano-positioning applications, including biomedical and pharmaceutical.
They provide a significant advantage over traditional roller bearings: because they are non-contact, there is zero friction/wear.
Silent and smooth in operation, IBS Precision Engineering's modular air bearings provide high repeatability and acceleration, and are inexpensive and robust.
Unlike conventional orifice air bearings, New Way porous media technology controls the airflow across the entire bearing surface through millions of sub-micron-sized holes in the material.
More consistent air pressure distribution ensures superior performance.
With no friction/wear problems or lubrication requirements, air bearings are ideal for applications in abrasive, dry and demanding environments that would damage traditional contact bearings.
They are also approved for use in Class 10 clean rooms, where the constant flow of air helps keep the dust and particles found even in that environment away from the bearing surface.
