High-efficiency Bearings Exhibit 30% Less Friction (Pic)

SKF has developed ranges of spherical and cylindrical roller bearings which, it says, exhibit at least 30% less friction and consume much less energy than its standard products. The lower friction also results in lower running temperatures, extended grease life and prolonged relubrication intervals.

Initially, the open spherical bearings will be offered in five sizes and targeted at ventilation fan applications. If there is customer demand, other sizes will be produced.

The low-loss cylindrical roller bearings (above) exhibit a friction reduction of at least 30% in axially-loaded applications and have a higher dynamic load rating than conventional bearings. These bearings will be aimed at industrial and wind energy transmissions.

Manufacture of the low-loss bearings will start during the second quarter of 2009. Last year, SKF introduced high-efficiency single-row, deep-groove ball-bearings and tapered roller bearings. It says that customer demand for these is increasing and that the ranges are expanding.
