Professor Stathis Ioannides, SKF Group Director for Product Engineering has been awarded the Tribology Trust's Gold Medal; internationally recognized as the highest honour in tribology research and application.
The award, administered by the United Kingdom Institution of Mechanical Engineers recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of tribology; an area of science focusing on the study of friction, wear and lubrication.

Professor Ioannides is a world acknowledged expert in tribology and was main developer of the ISO standard for calculations of bearing life, used today by all bearing companies in the world. The ISO standard, based on the SKF Life Theory that Ioannides worked on from 1985, was formally issued in 2006.
The Gold medal will be presented to Professor Ioannides in early 2009, at a prestigious award ceremony in the United Kingdom.
As well as leading Product Engineering for the SKF Group, Professor Ioannides is a Visiting Professor at Imperial in the United Kingdom, which is one of the prominent and most renowned universities in the world for tribology studies.
