Bearings Help Flip Outdoor Signs Each Morning
McDonald's signs required bearings able to accommodate chassis manufacturing tolerances as well as misalignment caused during shipping and installation of the finished assembly.
When McDonald's wanted to roll over their signs after breakfast the sign manufacturers called on Spyraflo to help provide a quality, durable solution. Every morning, whatever the weather, in thousands of McDonald's restaurants throughout the world the menu changes from an early start breakfast selection to the daytime menu. The menu boards need to change silently and easily.
Florida Plastics International supplies power-driven menu boards and signage for all McDonald's fast food outlets. The design criteria for the revolving menu boards were reliability, maintenance-free and silent working.
The challenge faced by the designers was to incorporate display material, lighting and a power transmission system into a large sheet steel frame. It had to be designed taking weight and size into consideration, ease of use and with economy in mind.
The final design required bearings able to accommodate chassis manufacturing tolerances as well as misalignment caused during shipping and installation of the finished assembly.
To achieve this the Spyraflo BFM-375-A, flange-mount, self-aligning, Delryn, 10mm diameter bearings were selected. The combination of +/-5 degree self-alignment and the zero maintenance Delryn bearing gives smooth rotation with minimum start-up torque.
