Dana Corporation Supplying Drivetrain, Engine Products for New Polaris Ranger RZR Utility Vehicle
Dana Corporation announced today that it has begun supplying Spicer® transmission assemblies, Spicer® driveshafts, Victor Reinz® gaskets, and Long® radiators for the newly released Polaris Ranger RZR trail-capable, side-by-side vehicle.
Designed to appeal to a wide variety of riders, including trail riders, hunters, and sport enthusiasts, the Ranger RZR was recognized as the "Best of Class" side-by-side vehicle by ATV Magazine.
"Dana is pleased to expand its relationship with Polaris, a company known for excitement and innovation, and support the launch of the Ranger RZR," said Glenn Richardson, Dana's vice president and general manager of Off-Highway Systems - Americas & Asia Pacific. "Developing drivetrain and engine products that met the performance criteria and space limitations of the Ranger RZR was both a challenge and great opportunity for our engineering teams."
The Ranger RZR boasts a true all-wheel-drive (AWD) system that automatically engages when the rider needs more forward traction and automatically reverts back to two-wheel drive when AWD is no longer needed. This system includes Spicer transmission assemblies produced at Dana's Fredericktown, Ohio, facility. These assemblies include:
-- A rear non-differentiating axle that continuously provides torque to
both rear wheels for trail conditions;
-- A five-position - park, reverse, neutral, forward low, and forward high
- transmission, which utilizes a unique, Dana-patented inline shifting
mechanism; and
-- A transfer case that provides power to the front axle.
The transmission and transfer case incorporate all helical gearing, and the rear axle uses an automotive-style hypoid gear set that provides smooth power flow. A combination of ball, needle roller, and tapered bearings are used throughout the drivetrain assembly. All housings are aluminum to provide a lightweight package.
The drivetrain incorporates electrical devices - a gear indicator switch for gear selection annunciation and a ground speed sensor. Spicer driveshafts for the Ranger RZR are produced at Dana's facility in Itzia-Deba, Spain.
Powered by a liquid-cooled, even-firing Polaris Big Bore 800 Twin EFI engine, the Ranger RZR is the fastest accelerating side-by-side with the highest horsepower in its class - accelerating to 35 miles per hour (mph) in four seconds and topping out at 55 mph.
Helping to cool the engine are all-aluminum Long CT-Series radiators produced at Dana's Cambridge, Ontario, plant. Sealing the high-performance engine are several Victor Reinz products including:
-- Multi-layer steel cylinder-head gaskets and single-layer steel base
gaskets produced in Milwaukee, Wis.;
-- Spring seats made in Avilla, Ind.; and
-- Secondary soft gaskets made in Robinson, Ill.
