Serious injury, no one in the explosion Thursday afternoon in the coal-fired power plant about 50 miles northwest of Atlanta, utility officials said.
Plant Bowen Unit 2 exploded while it is offline for maintenance work, said Charles Eaton, Georgia Public Service Commission, chairman of the electric utility regulation. Eaton said he heard of the Georgia Power Company officials.
"In addition to some minor bumps and bruises, everyone is safe and sound," Eaton said. "We are very happy." Officials said Thursday night that three people treated for minor injuries at the scene, and the fourth from the local hospital for treatment and release.
The cause of the explosion is not clear. The utility collected preliminary data indicate that there is a fault or mechanical failure causes the plant to produce an explosion, Georgia Power Company spokesman Mark Williams said. He said that there are some minor injuries.
"We've got a survey to see what happened," Williams said. "There is not a threat to the public."
The plant's four units off-line Thursday night, according to the survey, the bombing is not expected to affect the service, said Jacob Hawkins, spokesman for the Georgia Power Company.
Connie Morrison, who lives across the street from the plant, told the Rome News - Tribune to explode sounds like a low-flying aircraft.
"We looked and saw the smoke from the plant Bowen, I called 911, and then we went downstairs and it sounds like we have heard the same thing over and over, we grabbed our belongings left the house together," she said. '
