Australian stocks wavered between small gains and losses early Monday, with the S&P/ASX 200 index fractionally lower at 4,458.50. Gold extractor Newcrest Mining Ltd. fell 2.5% following a sharp drop for the price of the precious metal in New York on Friday after stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data reduced the chances of more U.S. monetary easing. Earnings helped support the Australian market, however, with banking giant Westpac Banking Corp. up 1.1% after reporting a 5% increase in fiscal-year adjusted earnings that exceeded analyst estimates.
